Florida MA

Filled With Beauty, History and Adventure

Florida MA is a small town situated in the northeast corner of Berkshire County. But, although it is small, this picturesque community is filled with history, outdoor adventure, fun, and relaxation.

Located on one of the most scenic stretches of the famous Mohawk Trail, the town of Florida provides breathtaking views along the way.

Whitcomb Summit Florida MA

One of the most popular scenic attractions is the Whitcomb Summit where “the Trail” reaches its highest point at 2,173 feet. Gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and valleys may be enjoyed from this spot.

Visitors may also stop at the
Elk memorial statue which was
erected by the Elks Club on
June 17, 1923 in honor of
Veteran Elks Lodge members
who died during WWI.

A little farther down “the Trail” is the Eastern Summit with yet more beautiful scenic views to behold.

And, just a bit farther beyond is a privately owned retreat that is admired by many who pass by.

If you are a train buff, you can view the Hoosac Tunnel which runs through the mountain and underneath the town. While the Western portal is located in the city of North Adams, the eastern portal to the Hoosac Tunnel is located on River Road alongside the Deerfield River in the town. And, the shaft of the tunnel is located on Central Shaft Road on the other side of town.

Also located on the other side of town is Savoy Mountain State Forest . This is a popular spot for fishing, camping, hiking and other outdoor activities.

During the summer months, picnicking and swimming are enjoyed at Savoy Mountain State Forest. Although lifeguards may not be present. Canoeing and boating are allowed but, only clean, non-motorized boats may be used. And, a hike on the Busby Trail to Spruce Hill becomes a rewarding adventure when you experience its beautiful views from the top.

During the winter months, activities include snowshoeing and cross country skiing.

Located in the most northeastern corner of Berkshire County is Bear Swamp Hydroelectric Project. The Deerfield River from Bear Swamp to Zoar Gap, provides some of the best Class II - III+ kayaking in the area due to the water release from the Project.

And, Bear Swamp Project, developed by the New England Power Company, offers an underground Visitors Center providing information about the project and how power is generated through its turbine system. The property also offers recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and picnicking that are free to the public.

Another place to enjoy Class II-IV kayaking at any time during the season is on Cold River in Florida MA from Rt 2 at Deadman’s Turn to Deerfield River .

For those who would rather not be in a kayak, fishing these rivers is a popular pass time.

Local Fact:

Florida MA is “the” place to find Florida Mountain turnip. It is said to have a sweeter taste because it is left in the ground until the frost has hit.

Is Florida Mountain turnip included in your holiday meal?

If not, you should give it a try. Because contrary to popular belief…
it is the best stuff on Earth.

So, if you are looking for a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, why not plan a trip to Florida MA? Take in the scenery, go for a hike, kayak a river or enjoy a leisurely picnic. You’ll be glad you did.
