New Marlborough
Meeting House on the Village Green
New Marlborough is a small town located in beautiful Southern Berkshire Massachusetts. And, both indoor and outdoor-lovers will appreciate the activities this town has to offer.
For the indoor-lover, The Meeting House, located on the Village Green in the center of town, holds a variety of events including historic talks, art exhibitions, musical events, and more.
Outdoor-lovers may experience the beauty and solitude of Campbell Falls. Located in Campbell Falls State Park, you may enjoy the spectacular view of an 80-foot, two-step waterfall as the mesmerizing flow of water rushes into a sparkling pool below.
The Berkshire Fish Hatchery is another place of interest in New Marlborough. After a five year closing and refurbishment, it is now the only federal hatchery in the United States to be run completely by volunteers.
It is used not only as a hatchery for Atlantic salmon, rainbow, and brown trout, but is also used to educate the public on issues such as maintenance, protection, and improvement of the fish population, its habitat, watersheds and ecosystems.
Self-guided tours may be taken along the seven miles of nature trails that run through the Hatchery property allowing visitors to view wildlife and wetland habitats. Signs are posted to aid in identifying the many species of native plant and animal life.
And, in the winter, visitors may go snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing.
For the fisherman or woman, New Marlborough has plenty of fishing holes to be tried. These include:
Larger bodies of water such as:
- East Indies Pond
- Gleason Pond
- Harmon Pond
- Harnett Pond
- Hay Meadow Pond
- Hunts Pond
- Juniper Pond
- Lake Buel
- Mill Pond
- Stevens Pond
- Thousand Acre Swamp Reservoir
- Windemere Lake Reservoir
- York Lake
Streams, rivers, and creeks such as:
- Brewer Brook
- Campbell Falls
- Ginger Creek
- Umpachene River
- Whiting River
Avid hikers will enjoy a trek along one of the hiking trails to be found here.
Hikers may take a 1-½ mile trek through the wooded reservation known as Dry Hill. As you wander through the forest, you will be able to view native plant and animal life as you follow alongside a brook and past ponds and swamplands.
You may also choose to hike the 2-mile trail found at Questing where you may wander along streams, through meadows and woodlands, and past the cellar holes and stone walls of an abandoned 200-year-old Colonial settlement formerly known as Leffingwell. This is where the first children of Berkshire County were born, excluding earlier Native American inhabitants.
Or, you may prefer to take a stroll along North Road beginning in back of the Old Inn on the Green. This is a great walk for anyone who prefers to avoid the forest and is looking for a peaceful walk along a country road instead. On the North Road, you will observe beautiful scenery without being disturbed by the outside world. And, in the winter, it is a wonderful place to go cross-country skiing.
If you are looking for a place to eat, you will find many restaurants and eateries located in the surrounding area with a wide variety of food options to choose from.
Planning to stay in the area? If so, there are a number of Southern Berkshire accommodations to be found.
So, plan to take a visit to New Marlborough soon and enjoy the beauty of the Berkshires and all it has to offer.
