Sandisfield
State Forest, Arts Center and More
Sandisfield is the largest town in Berkshire County in terms of land area but one of the smallest in terms of population.
And, with lack of population comes the chance to connect with nature
and “get away from it all.”
One of the best places to do this is at one of the several pieces of land that make up Sandisfield State Forest.
The main parcel, which is used most by the public, contains York Lake. This area has easy accessed and allows visitors to participate in a number of activities. These activities include:
- Day-Use Area With Beach
- Picnicking
- Swimming
- Non-Motorized Boating
- Fishing
- Hunting
- Horseback riding
- Walking Trails
- Hiking
- Snowshoeing
- Cross-Country Skiing
To enjoy scenic views of York Lake, you can take a hike along Pond Loop Trail, one of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s designated “Healthy Heart Trails.” The trail begins at York Lake picnic area and is an easy 2-mile walk.
And, if you love to hike, there is a more secluded 3-mile loop which takes you through another section of the state park forest land and past two lakes: West Lake and Abbey Lake. West Lake Trail is well maintained, has a moderate to strenuous level of difficulty, and takes about 1 ½ hours to complete.
For those who are avid fishermen and women, this town has plenty of places to fish.
These include:
Larger bodies of water such as:
- Abbey Lake
- Atwater Pond
- Clam Lake Reservoir
- Colebrook River Lake
- Lake Marguerite
- Mirror Lake
- Morley Swamp Reservoir
- North Silver Lake Reservoir
- Pelton Reservoir
- Spectacle Ponds
- Upper Spectacle Pond
- West Lake
Streams, rivers, and creeks such as:
- Buck River

- Thorp Brook
Animal lovers will enjoy a trip to the Red Barn Alpaca Farm where you can learn more about these gentle creatures or attend an alpaca shearing.
When you have had the chance to commune with nature and are ready to face the world, the Arts Center has numerous types of arts and entertainment events to attend.
When you are ready for a bite to eat, you will find a number of places to eat in the surrounding area with a wide variety of food options to choose from.
And, if you are planning a visit, there are many Southern Berkshire accommodations to choose from.
So, plan to take a trip to Sandisfield soon and enjoy the beauty of the Berkshires and all it has to offer.
